It is not uncommon to have restricted cruising areas, especially in yacht hull policies. Insurance companies are confronted with varying degrees of risk depending on the cruising area, which means that the amount of the policyholder’s premiums can vary as well. If, for example, a yacht spends it’s time only on inland waters, the risk of damage is lower than on rivers or in coastal waters. For instance, if a client suffers a broken mast in the Caribbean, the actual damage costs are likely to be compounded by the high cost of transporting the replacement parts. In addition, the infrastructure in many regions is often quite poor, meaning that in the event of damage, your insurance company has to pay much higher costs than, for example, in Europe, where we have access to a network of shipyards, salvage companies, and insurance adjusters. Assuming your yacht has the requisite suitability, Pantaenius usually can offer worldwide coverage. There are however regions, such as the Red Sea, where we have to set certain restrictions.

Transponder systems for locating the yacht, e.g. after a theft, are a great idea, and we have been following developments very closely.  However, the number of losses prevented through the installation of transponders is very small in comparison to the total volume of all other losses. For this reason, we are currently unable to offer any premium discount when a transponder is installed. However, if uniform standards are introduced in the future, additional functions are added (e.g. bilge alerts), and a large number of installations are seen, we will certainly reconsider a premium discount.
Our tip regarding transponder systems: If you plan to install such a system, be sure to get in-depth advice from specialists. The equipment price is often only a small fraction of the actual cost of such a system.

On your application, you determine the date on which you would like insurance cover to begin. Cover then begins at 12:00 p.m. The earliest date is the day on which we receive the application. Insurance cover cannot be granted retrospectively.

Our tip regarding transfer of ownership: When purchasing the yacht, please pay careful attention to the date on which ownership is transferred to you. You will normally require your own insurance beginning on this date.

The insurance covers damages to the designated yacht, its machinery, equipment, inventory and gear, and dinghies, as well as personal effects.   Insurance cover applies within the cruising area stated in the policy and also extends to customary places of insured items on land. The insurance covers the policyholder, as well as co-insured persons, in the event that damage is suffered in connection with ownership or use of the yacht designated in the policy and a claim is made by third parties on the basis of legal liability rules. The insurance covers all accidents, such as tripping and falling, suffered by insured persons while using the insured yacht. Cover is in place even if you were not responsible for the accident or if it was caused by others. The policy amount is available as a lump sum to the persons who were on board. Therefore, in the event of an accident, it must be split among the persons who were on board.

Dinghies and their engines are covered just like the vessel without any special declaration, provided they are used for the purposes for which they are intended. A dinghy is used to travel to shore, to let out and take in lines, or to haul the yacht. It is also covered if it used for travel from the yacht to nearby bathing coves or areas, as long as a connection can be made to the yacht.

Our tip regarding the dinghy: In some countries, e.g. Italy, the construction or engine number of the dinghy must be documented on the confirmation of cover. Therefore, please provide us with these numbers, if needed.

In general, the yacht and its crew are insured during all private and sporting activities. This, of course, includes sailing at regattas as well.

Our tip regarding insurance confirmation (blue card/confirmation of cover): Always keep the current confirmation of cover (blue card) on board. This often needs to be shown, e.g., at regattas or at some harbours. This is sent to you each year with your invoice.

Wintertime yacht storage is of course covered by your yacht insurance. In a protected warehouse, out in the open (including with raised mast), or lying in water – at Pantaenius, full coverage remains in place, even during the mid-winter.

Our tip regarding dry storage: If the operator of your dry-storage facility presents you with a waiver of recourse, this means that the operator does not intend to assume liability for any damages it may cause. If so, please contact us, for instance, via the service hotline, so that we can increase the cover on your policy.

No, yacht insurance is always placed for the entire year. In fact, 40% of all hull damages occur in dry storage. Whether fire, force majeure, or theft – we usually anticipate high damage amounts or even a total loss. A policyholder would be ill-advised to have an uninsured or under-insured yacht during the allegedly safe part of the year.

Our tip regarding policy amount: The insured value is fixed in the hull insurance from Pantaenius. Please regularly review whether the policy amount is sufficient to cover a total loss. We can gladly review this for you using some current data and a few photos of your yacht.

The yacht’s annual hauling out – whether at the beginning or end of the season, or at other points during the year – is considered normal use and is of course insured. At many clubs, there is often no insurance for the crane. In this case, you have to haul out at your own risk and can not hold anyone liable. The hull insurance from Pantaenius, however, bears this risk for you.

“Personal effects” include personal items that are not part of the ship’s equipment or inventory, e.g. street clothing, sunglasses, diving and fishing equipment.

The insurance policy covers the designated vessel, the machinery, the equipment, the inventory, the dinghies, the gear, and personal effects. For this reason, you do not need to let us know about new machinery items on board your yacht. Only in the event of a loss do we require corresponding proof that you owned these items.

A new law for insurance brokers took effect in May 2007. As a result, payments resulting from claims made by you under existing policies with insurers may now only be received by us and paid to you under a power of attorney.

Our tip regarding the power of attorney: Submit the signed power of attorney together with the application; that way, you will avoid bureaucratic headaches in the event of a loss.

You should let us know as soon as possible about the damages incurred. In particularly urgent cases, please use our 24-hour damage hotline. For damages caused by third parties, please hold them liable for the damage incurred. In the event of fire, explosion, theft, burglary, vandalism, robbery, piracy, embezzlement, and fraud, please immediately file a complaint at the nearest police station. Please prepare a detailed damage report, take photographs and provide a professional estimate, as soon as possible.

When a yacht is sold, the insurance policy ends on the date of transfer of ownership. You can simply send us the purchase agreement, and we will cancel your policy. The unused portion of the premium will be reimbursed to you.

Our tip for the buyer: The buyer can opt to have temporary cover for one month following transfer of ownership on the basis of the old policies.
