Review of The Superyacht Cup Palma 2017

July 03, 2017

The Superyacht Cup is now the longest running superyacht regatta in Europe and last week, a fleet of 10 superyachts took to the Bay of Palma to compete for the title at the 21st edition.

Racing commenced with the Pantaenius Race Day on June 22nd, as has been the custom for several years owed to Pantaenius’ continued sponsorship of the event.

All five yachts in Class A were of composite construction, which made for some seriously competitive racing.  The recently launched 32.5m Ribelle (Vitters Shipyard) made an impressive comeback after a difficult first day, where she was last over the line, to then secure a second and first on days two and three respectively.

45m Saudade (Wally Yachts) gave a strong and consistent challenge, arriving fresh from a regatta win in Sardinia, but 33m WinWin (Baltic Yachts) successfully defended her title as Superyacht Cup reigning champion and lived up to her name, coming first in Class overall.

32m Bolero (Far Ocean/Bolero Yachts) won the trophy for Class B, as well as the regatta overall, with wins on race days one and two, followed by a third place day three.

Also within the Class B fleet were the 39m Atalante and 27.5m Atalante 1 (Claasen Shipyard), which made for a beautiful spectacle around the course.  Throughout the week, Atalante 1 managed to stay a place ahead of her larger sister however and finished second in Class, with Atalante third.

Racing aboard Windrose of Amsterdam in Class B was Pantaenius Superyacht Sales Manager, Jens Ploch.

The Superyacht Cup is adored by many for its relaxed atmosphere, with fun shore side events keeping guests refreshed and entertained throughout the week.  The social programme included post-race ‘happy hour’ drinks from fellow sponsors North Sails and Southern Spars, the Superyacht Cup paella dock party, owners’ BBQ at the St Regis Resort and the Pendennis Paddleboard Challenge – arguably more competitive than the superyacht racing!

Of this year’s event, Event Director Kate Branagh commented, “This year´s Superyacht Cup was a great success. Despite having fewer participants, in no way was the atmosphere diluted - the vibe on the dock each afternoon was amazing; such enthusiasm and energy from yacht owners, sponsors, crew and guests. It is such a unique regatta, combining exciting close racing with an informal and fun social programme. Pantaenius have been one of our longest-term sponsors and they are always a pleasure to work with, they understand the superyacht world and appreciate the organisation that goes in to creating a good regatta.

“Superyacht Cup is fortunate to have some of the best Race Officers on the circuit and a very professional Jury and Race Committee. I am also very proud of the SYC team who work together tirelessly to make the event run as smoothly and seamlessly as possible, roll on 2018!”
