The joint prevention concept between the Water Police (WSP) and Pantaenius against the theft of recreational vessels has been successfully practiced for two years.  Numerous cases prove that the engraving and registration of outboard motors, inflatables and equipment does not just solve thefts, it helps to prevent them.

The joint prevention concept between the Water Police (WSP) and Pantaenius against the theft of recreational vessels has been successfully practiced for two years.

WSP Flensburg confirms that the engraving has deterred thieves. During interviews some culprits confessed that they would not touch engraved and appropriately marked recreational vessels. The deterring effect is also confirmed by a case where boats were broken into in Flensburg. Five neighbouring boats with the sign by WSP and Pantaenius "Attention - Registered!" were not touched.

The engraving also helped in solving an entire series of thefts at Plau am See in Mecklenburg. Police officers here intercepted a vehicle in the border region Pomellen and discovered three engraved outboard motors, which had been reported stolen. Subsequent investigations solved around 40 burglaries in boathouses.

Boots-PassThe prevention concept envisages the engraving of outboard motors, boat accessories, nautical objects and boats with an individual number.  This number is registered in a boat passport together with other relevant data.  In addition, bright yellow, weather resistant stickers are applied to the respective object, which identify it as "registered". The preventative measure is free for the owner: the police undertake the engraving and the registration, while Pantaenius supplies the engraver, the stickers and the boat passports.

Due to the success of the program five other German states have joined the action of Pantaenius and WSP Schleswig-Holstein.  Up to now almost 10,500 outboard motors, more than 2,100 boats, 1,600 pairs of binoculars and almost 11,200 pieces of equipment have been registered.

The theft of outboard motors is now on the increase in Denmark. Here the Police keep finding stolen goods which are unidentifiable and can thus not be returned to their rightful owners.  As a pioneer in security issues, Pantaenius is now in the process of launching an engraving action in Denmark, based on the German example.
