Information regarding boat registration

The CE-Certification is not to be confused with the boat registration.  A general obligation to register applies in inland waters since 1995.

Registration for lake and coastal waters in Germany is only required from a length of 15 meters upward, but is voluntary for smaller vessels.

The registration can be issued at an authorised office such as the Deutscher Motoryachtverband (DMYV), the ADAC, at all Waterway and Shipping Authorities or at the Seeschiffsregister (Maritime Register) at the District Court.

Only the entry at the Maritime Register at the District Court is accepted as proof of ownership. It is the only way to mortgage a yacht with a boat mortgage, similar to a property. The mortgage is entered in the ship's registry as a surety for the creditors.  A copy of the registration should be provided to the insurance company.
