Pros and Cons of Storage Facilities
Which type of storage is the best and most secure option for my vessel? There are three types, and each has its particular advantages and disadvantages:
Indoor Storage
Advantages:
- Good protection against weather
- Ability to do work on the yacht
- Electrical supply available
Disadvantages:
- Most expensive type of winter storage
- Close proximity to other yachts (especially in the event of a fire)
- Not common in the UK
Outdoor Storage
Advantages:
- Considerably less expensive than indoor storage
- Ability to work on the yacht outside of indoor business hours
- Better options for fire extinguishment
Disadvantages:
- Exposed to weather
- Increased risk of theft and damage
- Potential problems with electrical supply
Left in the Water for the Winter (should generally be avoided)
Advantages:
- Least expensive type of winter storage
- Yacht can be used at any time
Disadvantages:
- Increased risk of damage from freezing, including to vessel surfaces.
- Few winterized berthing facilities in northern Europe
